Bernd Zimmer ist co-founder of the „Young Wild Painters“ movement in Berlin of the seventies. In the last forty years he has created a substantial artistic oeuvre. His works are present in prominent collections and museums all over the world. It is worth noting that Bernd Zimmer made his debut with a group exhibition in 1976 at the “Kunstverein” in Frankfurt am Main. Today Galerie Berghout is proud to present this highly accomplished artist’s first ever solo exhibition in Frankfurt am Main with a range of his works of the cycles “Cosmos”, “Reflexions” and “Crystal World” originating between 2009 and 2019.

Since his temporary residence at the Villa Massimo in Rom 1983/84 Bernd Zimmer undertook extensive travels to our planet’s most isolated places leaving a formative and lasting influence on his artistic work. His abstract landscapes do not originate from actually painting in open nature but evolve in the studio through remembering and reflecting on what was seen and experienced. The title of this exhibition “Second Nature” is based on his method of “working by reflection”.

After landscape painting – once a leading discipline in art history – became somewhat obsolete due to various factors, it was Bernd Zimmer who relentlessly pursued this art form further and took it to another level. Through his artistic efforts this intellectual and exceptional artist succeeded in once again putting landscape painting back on the agenda of 21st century painting.

In his works Bernd Zimmer masterly visualizes the sublime transformation of nature and the universe.
